Nakamichi 481 Z
From HifiWiki
Nak 481 z main difference from 481 is Digital red led meter instead of VU meters and metal tape capability. It's a 3 head deck but without a tape/source head monitor circuit. Some would say it was a two and half head deck. Generally quoted as made from 79-81 and using the Classic Nak tape transport. They sound wonderful and are old school Nakamichi in sound character rather than the "CD sound competing' later decks such as BX, CR series. If this is one you can get - be happy but get it serviced or join [<http://www.naks.com/mailman/listinfo/naktalk>] and learn to do it yourself. likewise via http://www.nakamichi-schenk.nl/
One can get modern remotes for many Nak models and often find (overpriced older hard wired remotes on eBay etc.

Quote from Naktalk :
If you are going to listen to your old tapes collection and if your tapes were recorded on different tape decks then a Nak with playback head azimuth adjustment would be handy: a Dragon, CR-7, Cassette Deck 1 or DR 1 (Cassette Deck 1 and DR 1 are identical inside). Playback azimuth adjustment _really_ does make a difference when listening to tapes recorded on different tapes.
General opinion is the newer models don't have "something" the older ones have, but as I only have Cassette Deck 1 I cannot say how do they compare to Dragon and CR-7.
Hope this helps you.
